ABOUT ABOUT

Join us at the Old Bakery & Emporium on Saturday, September 21st for the opening of our new art exhibition, "Pieces Coming Together: The Art of the Mosaic."

The exhibit features the work of members of the Austin Mosaic Guild. The event is free and open to the public.

The Austin Mosaic Guild (AMG) was founded in 2008 with the mission to promote mosaics, both traditional and contemporary. AMG does this by encouraging and supporting members in learning skills and techniques to better express themselves in the mosaic medium and finding opportunities for them to exhibit their work. The guild includes professional artists with many years of experience to members who are just beginning their mosaic journey.

Our members, working in the medium of mosaic, use a rich and varied palette of natural and manmade materials. This includes manufactured glass tile, handmade glass smalti, stained and fused glass, marble and stone, pebbles, ceramics, found pieces, and repurposed materials. Individual pieces that are cut, broken, or modified are called “tesserae.” When these “tesserae” are positioned and arranged in specific ways, they create not only beautiful ornamentation, but  can also express feelings and ideas as well. In addition, the cut, uneven surfaces of stone and glass tesserae create luminosity which makes mosaics come alive.

We thank Old Bakery & Emporium and the City of Austin for the opportunity to share our passion for mosaics with the greater Austin community.
